How Much Do Gazebo Weights Need to Weigh?
How much ballast a gazebo needs, what changes the figure, and why you should weight every leg rather than guess at the corners.
The short answer
As a rough starting point, allow around 40kg of weight per gazebo leg on a sheltered site, and more for larger canopies and exposed ground. Weight every leg, not just the corners you think face the wind. Treat any figure as a starting point rather than a safety guarantee, because the right ballast depends on the canopy size, the height and how exposed the site is.
What changes how much you need
- Canopy size. A bigger roof catches more wind, so a 4m by 4m gazebo needs more per leg than a 3m by 3m.
- How exposed the site is. An open field, seafront or car park needs far more than a sheltered courtyard.
- Height and side walls. Taller frames and fitted walls act as bigger sails and need more holding down.
- How long it stays up. A gazebo left up all weekend will meet changing weather, so err on the heavier side.
Indicative starting points
Common starting points only, not safety ratings. Confirm the right ballast for your exact gazebo with the manufacturer.
Around 40kg per leg
Small pop-up gazebo on a sheltered site.
40kg to 80kg per leg
Standard gazebo on open ground.
100kg or more per leg
Large or exposed marquee.
Weight every leg to these figures, not just two corners.
Weight every leg
Spread the ballast evenly across all legs. Wind can come from any direction and lift the frame from the side you did not expect, so an even hold on every leg is safer than piling weight onto two corners.
Which blocks to use
40kg blocks are the everyday choice and come in sets, so you can weight a whole frame in one order. For larger marquees and exposed sites, step up to 100kg blocks or use more than one per leg. See the marquee and gazebo weights range, or the full products page for every size and price.
Common questions
How much weight do I need per gazebo leg?
Around 40kg per leg is a common starting point for a small gazebo on a sheltered site, rising to 80kg or more per leg for larger canopies or exposed ground. It depends on the size and how exposed the site is, so confirm the figure with your gazebo manufacturer for anything demanding.
How many concrete weights do I need for a gazebo?
At least one per leg, so four for a standard gazebo. Larger or exposed setups may need two per leg or a heavier block on each. Buying a set of the right number covers the whole frame in one go.
Can you have too much weight on a gazebo?
Within reason, more weight simply means a firmer hold. The practical limits are handling and surface protection: heavier blocks are harder to move, and on a finished surface a mat under each block avoids marking. Balance the hold you need against how easy it is to set up and take down.
Should I weight all four legs or just the windward side?
All four. Wind shifts direction, and an unweighted leg is a lifting point. An even hold across every leg is far safer than concentrating weight on the side you expect the wind to come from.
