Dead weight, cast to a known figure

Kentledge is simply dead weight used as a counterbalance or hold-down: dense mass, usually concrete or iron, placed to resist an upward or sideways force. Precast concrete blocks are the workhorse version, cast to a set weight and ready to place.

  • Known, cast-in weight so you can total the ballast on site with confidence.
  • Cast-in rebar handle to position the smaller blocks by hand or by machine.
  • Stacks and spreads to build the mass a job calls for across a base, frame or foot.
  • Lives on site in any weather and reuses across jobs for years.
  • Supplied by the pallet so you order the tonnage you need in one go.

Where kentledge earns its place

  • Counterweight for cranes, rigs and hoists
  • Ballast for scaffold and mobile access towers
  • Weight for pile and anchor load testing
  • Hold-down for tanks, pipework and ducting
  • Ballast for solar frames and temporary buildings
  • Propping and temporary works counterbalance

Weights for kentledge

For counterweight and hold-down work, the heavier blocks do the job. The 100kg and 500kg blocks stack to the tonnage you need, and the 1000kg single block gives a full tonne in one lift. See every weight, set size and price on the products page.

Where else these blocks work

The same cast weight does plenty of other jobs. If it needs holding down or counterbalancing, there is a block for it.

Common questions

What is kentledge?

Kentledge is dead weight used as a counterbalance or to hold something down: a dense mass, usually concrete or iron, placed to resist an upward or lateral force. Precast concrete kentledge blocks are cast to a known weight and set where the ballast is needed, then lifted off and reused on the next job.

How much does a kentledge block weigh?

Our concrete kentledge comes in 100kg and 500kg blocks that stack to build up the tonnage you need, plus a 1000kg single block for heavy counterweight. Lighter 40kg blocks are available too for smaller hold-down jobs.

What is kentledge used for?

Common uses include counterweight for cranes, rigs and hoists, ballast for scaffold and mobile access towers, weight for pile and anchor load testing, and hold-down for tanks, pipework and temporary structures.

Do you hire or sell kentledge blocks?

We supply blocks for purchase, from single weights to full pallets at trade quantities. For a delivered price, send your postcode and the tonnage you need and we will quote it.

Can I use these for pile testing or crane counterweight?

The blocks give a known dead weight, but load-critical and structural jobs such as pile testing often need engineering calculation and sign-off. We supply the weight to the figure you specify, so confirm the required mass and any certification with your engineer.
